That is really tough…There are so many (many former professors and friends of mine.)  For the public figures, here is quick list off of the top of my head:  Jane Jacobs, Carl Sagan, the Eameses, Sarah Tze, the Yes Men, Marx+Engels, Roger Fry, Stanley Kubrick, Alvar Aalto, the Cohen Bros., Marcuse, Robert Irwin… a hundred more…  They’ve deepened my understanding of the world. They observe and tinker with purpose.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
In a perfect world: catch up on the backlog of Cabinet Magazines and rewrite proposals for art projects.

The truth: I’d work one hour longer.

Tom Fruin

Broken plexiglass, lost playing cards and discarded drug baggies may seem like trash to most people…but not to Tom Fruin. These are just some of the materials that this New York-based artist uses to form his large-scale sculptures. His 2006 series of “quilts” are surprisingly appealing pieces sewn together from drug paraphernalia that he found on city streets. Tom’s recent piece, ‘Kolonihavehus’, is a an outdoor sculpture built with thousands of found plexiglasss in Copenhagen, Denmark. The eye-catching installation forms a simple house built of what looks like stained glass because of the varied colors and sizes of the found materials. This Helsinki-born artist draws from her Scandinavian background and her cosmopolitan lifestyle to create stunningly simple designs and illustrations, all with a New York City sense of humor. In 2010, Lotta received the Art Directors Club Young Guns Award and was selected by Print Magazine for its annual New Visual Artists review, highlighting 20 rising international designers under the age of 30. I still go to her for advice if I’m stuck with a piece, and still value her opinion above many others, even though we’re in very different creative fields (she’s a fine artist and stage designer).

Read through the endless pile of magazines I buy, stack on my bedside table and never get down to actually read.

My body would want me to sleep, but I’d probably end up finding a way to be productive with that extra hour. Most days, that is.

This new boutique line of jewelry was conceived by photographer and recent NYU grad, Erin Wahed, and is hand-crafted by her mother and world-renowned jeweler, Janis Kerman.
