Ace Hotel murals. New York Times illustrations. High-profile magazine covers. Provocative book jackets. What doesn’t Timothy Goodman design? Timothy, a multidisciplinary designer currently residing in San Francisco, hails from humble beginnings as a house painter and carpenter in his hometown of Cleveland. He ruminates about his birthplace, “Every time I go back I’m reminded of how far I’ve come and how far I still want to go.” Uncover more about this inspirational designer who has already gone impressively far.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Timothy Owen Goodman.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Bob Dylan. You can listen to his songs and potentially understand how to live.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
20 minutes to read, 20 minutes to meditate, 20 minutes to sleep.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?My hometown: Cleveland, Ohio. I used to be a laborer/house painter in my late teens and early 20s. We’d work on homes for 16 hours a day. Every time I go back I’m reminded of how far I’ve come and how far I still want to go.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
My biggest fear is flying. Coincidentally, nothing makes me feel more alive. Fortunately I have to fly regularly, so I have plenty of time to work on this issue. I’d be a pilot for a day.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I love making books and notes for the special ones. If you’re a super special person then I’ll paint your home, too!

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
For my 21st birthday, my mother gave me a big scrapbook of my entire life that consists of hair, drawings, cards, pictures, etc. To give you an idea, this book is so elaborate it has napkins from my 1st birthday party.

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Years ago, someone very important to me gave me a piece of advice that I’ve lived by: “Put your focus on who you need to become, first, and you’ll attract everything you want in life.”

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
I’m very inspired by my fellow design friends/peers. Throughout art history, artists formed relationships based on inspiration, competition, and admiration for their contemporaries: Manet and Goya, Matisse and Picasso, Basquiat and Warhol. Here are a few friends who do that for me: Jessica Walsh, Christopher Brand, Lindsay Ballant, Jessica Hische.

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
I think of the older designers who are my heroes. I imagine what they would do with the assignment I have, and what they would think of the work I am doing. If I think they’d like it—or find it funny, sexy, or clever—then I know I’m close.

This is very deep. In other words if you want to be a doctor(and everything it brings) you have to study hard and you will get good grades(you are attracting good grades by studying) and you will get into a good school(you are attracting good schools with your good grades) and then you graduate and become a doctor. By the time you are a doctor the mind trick is rooted in your head so hard everything else is just a child play. Since you wanted to be a doctor and now you are… then the power of attraction must work, right? Star Wars,The Secret, religion all the same.
Try freeing your self from wanting to be anything.
    devil’s advocate.
