Not every designer can turn simple lines into work with real impact. But Alessandra Olanow’s delicate strokes are all that’s needed to make her illustrations of New York life come alive. Her portrayals of bartenders, cafe patrons, and simple found objects capture intimate moments from the bustling city. 1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Whimsical, simple, humorous.
2. Who is your creative role model?
Rei Kawakubo of Comme de Garcons. Her designs are always so bold and new. The uncompromising nature of her work always inspires me.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Sit quietly somewhere and draw my surroundings.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
At the moment I am most inspired by my place in upstate Saugerties. I find there I am able to escape the everyday pressures of my city life . There’s a swimming hole across the street where I do my best daydreaming
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I’ve always wanted to bake. It just smells so good.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I’m still partial to the classic ‘mix tape’. of course now i burn CDs, but I love sharing music with friends. I put a lot of thought in my play lists and making an illustrated case is my kind of fun.
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
My favorite object in my home is a painting a friend made, Ayca Koseogullari. Its brought me so much happiness.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Keep your head down.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
Nowness, Communication Arts, Design Sponge, Epicurious.
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete
I guess I never fully feel like something is entirely finished. I’ll say “Ok it’s done!” and then a week later ill think “hmm…maybe I should add a little bird in there.”
