Iain Hector

Lions and tigers and bears, oh, Iain! One look at Iain Hector’s animal-inspired screen prints makes it pretty easy to see why this artist would prefer to be a zoologist for a day. Even though he says that “animals mostly seem easier to deal with than clients,”  he often combines animals and humans in his creations – like when adding hands and feet to an ape with a toucan beak. Learn more about Iain’s animal instincts below.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Generally quite daft.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Tony Hart. Rolf Harris. The influence of these two is fairly apparent.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
I’d work on my grand plan to introduce an eighth day into the week.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
East London. It’s difficult to live here and not feel the need to create.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
If not involved in some other design discipline, then perhaps working on a zoo. Or an ark. Animals mostly seem to be easier to deal with than clients.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Mix CDs. Burning a CD already seems quite old fashioned in this digital age, but I love spending time putting together a track listing and coming up with a suitable sleeve design to screen print and then fold up and glue together.

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
This is something of a creative bible for me. Every home should have one.

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I’m not sure. The worst advice I’ve ignored though, was not to spend three years studying graphic design. Some years later, after completing my degree in graphic design, the same person who offered that advice employed me… as a graphic designer.

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
Its Nice That, Flickr, V
i.sualize.us,

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
When it looked considerably better a couple of hours ago.
