At this year’s New York Fashion Week, you weren’t stylish unless Sam Horine took your picture. Sam profiled the most hip, interesting people attending the shows each day for his slideshow features on nymag.com. When Sam isn’t capturing the most glamourous people in New York, he’s photographing forgotten and under-appreciated places to highlight beauty in surprising locations. Check out this talented photog’s refreshing 10 ANSWERS below.
1. How would you describe your work in three words?
It’s always different.
2. Who is your creative role model?
I wouldn’t say that I have a specific creative role model but living in Brooklyn, I’m surrounded by interesting people and have had the good luck to meet many of them. I’ve always appreciated the landscapes of Jake Dobkin, the portraiture of Elizabeth Weinberg and the freewheeling spirit of Tod Seelie.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Spend more time w/ friends and family.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
I grew up on the water and have pretty much always lived near it, whether it is a river or the ocean. There’s something about the edges of land that I find inspiring.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be?
I’ve never had an office job – it might be interesting to try it out for a day although i doubt it’s for me.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Dinner parties!
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
I’m sort of partial to a wall of ceramic animal heads that we’ve collected over the years
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Keep moving forward and eventually you’ll get to where you want to be.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
I’ve been a long time fan of flickr as it’s a great way to see what other people are doing.
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
With a few exceptions, I try not spend a lot of time in post on my photographs, so when the shoot is done and the images have been downloaded w/ a few minor corrections for color, curves, crops etc the piece is done.
