Jeffrey Scher

jeffrey scher

Jeffrey Scher’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Academy Film Archives, Hirshhorn Museum, Pompidou Centre, Musee d’Art Moderne, Vienna Kunsthalle and Austrian National Archive. But his work rarely stays still. Jeffrey’s watercolor masterpieces are often seen in motion as part of his experimental films and animations. Lights, abstractions, and visual effects come together in Jeremy’s beautiful entries for his regular feature in The New York Times Opinionator Blog, “The Animated Life.” His most recent post, “Summer Hours,” illustrates his memories of the warm sun, cool water and a few mosquitoes. See what else he is dreaming up in his 10 ANSWERS below.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Learning to see.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Georges Melies.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Work on my mass hypnosis machine. I have most of the parts, just never the time.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
My wife’s mouth. For one it’s pretty, and she has great teeth, but also she says such smart things.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I have always wanted to be a malevolent street cleaner in one of those one man street cleaning trucks with the giant spinning steel bristle brush. I want Fifth or Madison avenue, uptown. That would be fun. I’d love to see what those brushes do to a BMW.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Paintings or drawings.

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
I’m very fond of my electric pencil sharpener.

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never overstay your welcome and always leave ‘em wanting more not less. – Warren Sonbert

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
UbuWeb Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free Books, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine and On-line Picasso Project

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
When I run out of things to fix, and when the music is locked. Ideally there should be something in it that makes me shiver.
