Max Lugavere does what he loves — singing and songwriting for his own music label, producing and co-hosting shows on Al Gore’s Emmy-winning station, Current TV, and forming a non-profit concert series. He is the ultimate doer. Max may be best known as one half of the popular TV duo, “Max and Jason,” but his creative energy doesn’t stop there. Max is currently organizing a non-profit concert series, Rockdrive, that directly supports local education needs with multi-artist events around the country. Learn more about this passionate creative force in his 10 ANSWERS below.
1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Fun. Creative. Unconventional. Between my TV projects, writing songs, forming a non-profit, and a book in the works, I’m pretty busy. But if you’re doing what you love, you never work a day in your life, right? I think I read that on a bumper sticker once.
2. Who is your creative role model?
My creative role models run the gamut. Bill Maher is a big one. Music has always been an inspirational mainline for me. From Ed Kowalczyk (of Live) to guys like Matt Nathanson and Ryan Star, I don’t think there’s a clearer embodiment of passion than a touring singer-songwriter. It’s an incredibly difficult business and lifestyle and these guys are making it, armed only with their integrity and their art.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Yoga. Or maybe finally taking some guitar lessons.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
The TED Conference. I went last year and am hoping to go again this year if my schedule allows. It is mind-fuckingly awesome in every possible way.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I’d love to be a biologist or doctor of some kind. I was a biology major for the first two years of college before switching to a double major in film and psychology. I love health sciences.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I’ve never written a song for someone but I bet that would be a good one.
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
My coffee french press. Or my iMac. Or my guitar.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Follow your bliss.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
Every day, after waking up, I visit a few sites: Psychology Today, The NY Times, TED, CNN, Fast Company, and Mac Rumors to name a few. I’ve also been known to visit I Can Has Cheezburger, but don’t tell anyone.
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
I never can. I’m a total perfectionist. I can fine-tune forever. That’s why I dig creative partnerships. Jason (my Current TV co-host and production partner) is usually good at stopping me from over thinking creative minutiae.
