Grace Bonney is a design maven who looks to Martha Stewart as a creative role model. Fittingly, The New York Times declared her popular blog, Design* Sponge, a “Martha Stewart Living for Millenials.” Grace’s website, featuring product reviews, city and gift guides, DIY projects, home makeovers, recipes and more, is the go-to online resource for all things design-related. Her long interest in crafts and DIY is evident in her regular posts highlighting burgeoning creative talent and decor that show the artist’s hand. Learn more about this design connoisseur in her 10 ANSWERS below.
1. How would you describe your work in three words?
I would describe D*S as: inspiring, happy, and releateable.
2. Who is your creative role model?
Martha Stewart and Ina Garten- women who are all about quality control.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Sleep. Or watch some fun cheesy tv to unwind.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
Savannah Georgia and New Orleans Louisiana- the architecture and culture of the deep South is always something I draw on when I think of my ideal home and what it would look like.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I love my job and probably wouldn’t change a thing (except maybe for more sleep time), but if I had to change I’d love to work for a food photographer or food stylist. I love food, but I really love watching a beautiful photo come together, too.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I think printed textiles are always fun- napkins, runners, etc. They’re always nice to use for events and are so easy to make and personalize. But of course a nice batch of brownies never hurt anyone. ![]()
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
Non-living? Probably a piece of jewelry. My jewelry collection is primarily antique and vintage and I guess I’d have to choose between my engagement ring, my great-grandmother’s onyx cocktail ring, or an antique paste-stone jabot pin that has two monkeys on it.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Trust your gut. It never leads me wrong.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
Mostly food or lifestyle sites. I love Matt bites, Ohjoy.blogs.com, Cafe Fernando, and Orangette.
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
I consider a post or a feature on the site complete when I re-read it and it makes me want to discover the artist or topic all over again ![]()
