Miller Mobley’s photographs are quintessentially southern in their passion. In a recent project for Birmingham Magazine, Miller used powerful lighting and tight compositions to portray local chaplains in an unexpected way. However, this Alabama native can’t wait to bring his soulful and dramatic style to subjects around the globe. 1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Soulful, authentic, and dramatic.
2. Who is your creative role model?
Richard Avedon; When I first saw his work 3 years ago, it changed my entire thinking on photography and what it means to be a photographer.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Spend more time reading.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
I would have to say New York City. From the energy to the endless opportunities, It’s a place where you can make your dreams come true. I actually happen to be moving there in two weeks.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I would love to be a chef for a day. I think it would be fun to create new dishes and experiment with all types of different foods.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Usually my gifts to people are photographs that I printed in my home… so there, I guess they are homemade.
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
My collection of photography books.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
True strength is found in humility.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
TED, the99percent, and many of my favorite photographers’ websites.
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
When the vision that I had in my heads comes to life through the photograph or when an unexpected surprise happens and it just feels right.
