Matt Shlian

It’s one thing to look good on paper, it’s another thing to look good with paper. Paper engineer Matt Shlian does both. He uses his scientific knowledge to meticulously create three-dimensional pop-up books, packaging designs and elaborate sculptures out of architected sheets. His paper fractals, geometric flowers and unfolding spirals highlight his mastery of the interaction between science and art. Unfold the magic behind Matt in his 10 ANSWERS below.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Seeing is forgetting.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Brian Eno, Lothar Meggendorfer, El-P, Dondi White, Christian Marclay, Ren Weschler, Buckminster Fuller, Edward R. Tufte

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
I’d love to say that I’d do something constructive, but I’d probably spend it doing more of the same.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
I like being near a large body of water.  I’m not sure I can pinpoint a place yet.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I’d like to play drums for At the Drive in circa 1998.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Something folded, cut or drawn.

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
Lily the cat.

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Ask for a kill fee.

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
I try not to look at too much stuff online.  I am a sponge and after seeing something I’ll think 6 months later it was my idea.  Those ffffound websites are incestuous for creative directors, I’m not sure the cutting edge is always the sharpest.

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
I think I’ve only really ever finished a handful of pieces. Everything leads to the next one.
