
Chris Dorland’spaintings and photo collages will fascinate any viewer. His juxtaposition of images from the 1960′s to the present, combined with a technique of scraping, spraying and rolling paint, creates hallucinatory and layered compositions. It’s no surprise that this Canadian-born artist has quickly risen to art world fame with shows all over the globe. His most recent exhibition is taking place in Rome’s Galleria Bonomo, but if Italy is too far away, get a glimpse into Chris’s psyche with his 10 ANSWERS below.
1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Corporate. Paranoid. Hyper Real.
2. Who is your creative role model?
Paul Verhoeven.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Sell it.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
The movie theater. It helps me dream.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I would want to work in Advertising. It’s fast and the art world is very slow.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I don’t love homemade gifts, but sometimes I like to give away drawings.
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
My couch. It’s a beaten up chesterfield. And my agave cactus. But I haven’t bought it yet.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I’m not sure it’s the best advice, but it’s the advice I’ve followed the closest: don’t have a plan B .
