“If I had to choose one word to describe my work it would be ‘Air’!… I’d love to see it float off the table,” proclaims Joe Cariati. And after one look at his creations, it’s easy to see he’s succeeded. Through his Los Angeles-based company, Joe Cariati Glass, Joe uses Venetian off-hand glassblowing techniques to create sophisticated hand-crafted vessels that are both one-of-kind and affordable. As Joe hoped, his work is a literally a breath of fresh air – and so are his delightful 10 ANSWERS below.
1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Pure. Clean. Airy.
2. Who is your creative role model?
I have two: Lino Tagliapietra and Therman Statom.
3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Daydream.
4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
New York City as the most inspirational place to marvel at humankind’s existence and inconsequence.
5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I would be a Barista at an upper scale coffee house (not a corp. chain). I simply want to be “that guy” that provides excellent pours for those who are snobby enough to know good espresso.
6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
I don’t have one, although I do make a mean Manicotti, so that’s not a bad idea for the future.
7. What is your favorite object in your home?
Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif.
8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
My mentor said, “You can do it all.” It was in response to me being conflicted about wanting to paint, blow glass and teach.
9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
When it’s signed.
