Eric Schlakman

If only Eric Schlakman could have written this post. If he’d written it, it’d undoubtedly be funny, smart and insightful — like all of his work. Whether Eric is writing irreverent online greeting cards for someecards.com or creating campaigns for global brands like Reebok, NFL and Intel, he always brings his characteristic charm and humor to the project. He is witty and clever (and, as the founder of this site can attest, a great boyfriend) as you’ll see from his 10 ANSWERS below. And if you happen to come across Eric today, be sure to wish him a happy birthday.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
It is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Ben Franklin. A consummate innovator. He had an utter disregard for the impossible, an imagination that knew no bounds, and a sweet head of hair.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Extend Happy Hour.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
The 3rd floor of NYC’s MoMA. The industrial modernism is fascinating to me. It’s an amazing intersection of art and business, and a reminder that great ideas and great design have lasting effects on us all.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
I would be a Major League Baseball manager in the seventh game of the World Series. But not just any manager. I’d be the manager when the New York Mets are the opposing team (God willing, one day soon). I would start all of my worst players and leave my worst pitcher in for the entire game. Then the Mets would win, and I would be at the celebratory parade the next day cheering from the sidewalk in my orange and blue.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Food. It brings people together. And it tastes better than a collage.

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
Framed photographs from my life. I know that’s not just one item, but I’m the last person on Earth who doesn’t have a digital camera, so I cherish the hard copies of those memories. (How cheesy it that!?)

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Never name drop.” Robert De Niro once told me that. Actually, it might have been Burt Reynolds. But really, I think the best advice I’ve ever received is “Don’t postpone joy.” It was a bumper sticker on my refrigerator growing up. Do what you love and do it now. Amen.

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
PopUrls.com, LikeCool.com, TheOnion.com, Good.is, DigitalBuzzBlog.com, SiteInspire.net, NetDiver.net, Motionographer.com, TechCrunch.com, MocoLoco.com, LifeHacker.com, YankoDesign.com, and FancyPipes.biz.

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
When it is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

What extraordinary insight – what clever imagination! Eric, like Ben Franklin, holds his kite to the lightening and doesn’t look back.
